Rotary recap and thanks to community

To the Mercer Island community: As members of the Mercer Island Rotary Club, many of us served as course marshals at the Rotary Half Marathon on Sunday, March 22. We helped shepherd the 3,800 runners and walkers along the courses and saw your patience in action. You drivers were willing to be re-routed or wait for a break in the runners to get to your destinations. You are examples of Rotary’s “Service Above Self” motto, too! We thank you for your graciousness. We are also grateful for the help from the city of Mercer Island, the police, the standby emergency vehicles, Community Center, the businesses, other service clubs, sponsors, vendors, the evening Mercer Island Presbyterian Church service dedicated to cancer support, and other partners who helped wage this mega-event. More than 300 volunteers pitched in — many friends from other organizations. Proceeds from the participants’ entry fees plus other donations will benefit colon cancer awareness and research, along with other Rotary projects throughout our community and the world. We expect to net more than $150,000. We do appreciate any suggestions you might have for next March. Thanks so much!
