The Mercer Island Momentum, a girls under-16 select team, defeated a team from Auburn on July 12 to win the Cornucopia Cup in Kent.

The team gave up only one goal in its four matches while scoring eight.

Dulce Moll led the Momentum offensive, scoring three goals, plus scores from Grace Braunstein, Clara Felker, Annie Mazure-Schmidt, Madeleine Tessier, and Hailey Chillem.

Defenders Erika Eagen in goal and fullbacks Tessier and Gabriela Strome, did not allow a goal for the entire tournament until 10 minutes remained in the championship game.

The Mercer Island team went into the cup final against the Auburn Synergy FC without key player Jessica Malcham due to injury. However the Islander girls still managed to control play with a dominant midfield featuring Isabella Stribling, Marissa Karpack, Makayla Virden, Mazure-Schmidt and Felker.

The Auburn Synergy knotted the score with ten minutes remaining. But the Momentum secured the win with four minutes left on an assist from Karpack to Chillem, volleying the ball into the upper right corner for the go-ahead goal. The Momentum defense — including Kelly Grady, Sophia Wrench, and Ashley Bucklin — held off a late offensive surge from the Synergy attack to close out the win for the title.
