Shots fired during attempted traffic stop following residential burglary

A Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) officer heard two gunshots being fired from a suspect vehicle during an attempted traffic stop following a residential burglary on the evening of May 1.

According to MIPD, the officer lost sight of the vehicle and didn’t locate it after the incident. MIPD received assistance from Kirkland, Bellevue and Clyde Hill police departments — including K9 officers and drones — for the investigation, which remains active. No additional suspects were found.

At approximately 9:46 p.m. on May 1, officers were dispatched to the reported burglary in the 4600 block of East Mercer Way, where a single occupant inside the residence heard intruders and called 911.

“The suspects left the residence, and a responding Mercer Island police officer observed a vehicle leaving the area traveling at a high rate of speed,” MIPD said, adding that a second officer engaged in the attempted traffic stop.

Since it’s still early on in the investigation, MIPD doesn’t know any more details from the incidents at press time. The Reporter will add to this story when more details become available.
