The boys tennis team advanced to 6-0 last week, with a 6-1 win over Lake Washington on Tuesday afternoon and another win over Roosevelt on Thursday. Against Lake Washington, the Islanders swept the singles competition, winning all four of the matches, while the doubles teams won all but one match against the Kangaroos.

Tennis wins away matches before two-game homestead

The boys tennis team advanced to 6-0 last week, with a 6-1 win over Lake Washington on Tuesday afternoon and another win over Roosevelt on Thursday. Against Lake Washington, the Islanders swept the singles competition, winning all four of the matches, while the doubles teams won all but one match against the Kangaroos.

During the meeting between Mercer Island and the RoughRiders, the Islanders won 5-2, as a singles and doubles team fell to the opposing team.

Singles — Max Franklin beat Eliot Low 6-4, 6-2; Andrew Smith beat Nikola Lakie 6-2, 6-2; Craig Deninger beat Satoshi Matsuura 6-2, 7-5; Jeremy Chow beat Rodion Khorusenko 6-2, 6-3.

Doubles — Matt Sedlacek-Glen Kelton beat Matthew Lim-Quentin Behrd 6-1, 6-2; Jon Lai-Koonmin Chua beat Patrick McCarthy-Ken Nanto 6-3, 6-2; Lake Washington’s Jordan Cox-CJ Donahue beat Nicke Medlock-Nate Mildeberger 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Singles — Jordan Smith beat Riley Peschon 6-1, 6-3; Andrew Smith beat Mark Van Winkle 6-0, 7-5; Erik Snyder beat Tom Ianelli 6-2, 6-0; Jack Streeter, of Roosevelt, beat Michael Shan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Doubles — Matt Sedlacek-Zack Elliot beat Corey Dansereau-Colin Owens 6-2, 6-1; Jon Lai-Glen Kelton beat Kyle Bove-Dustin McPhillips 6-1, 2-6, 6-4; Andy Siegel-Jimmy Zeng of Roosevelt beat Alex Foehu-Kevin Taki 6-4, 6-3.

Swimmers get week off; Ballard meet results in win

On Friday, Sept. 18, the Mercer Island girls swimming team traveled to Ballard, where the Islanders beat the Beavers, 106-80.

The first win of the afternoon came for Danielle Deiparine in the 200-meter freestyle race. She finished first with a time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds. Senior Jennifer Pak qualified for another state event in the 200-meter individual medley race with a time of 2:15.77. She also won the 100 backstroke event with a time of 1:05.04. Islander Christina Williamson won the 100-meter race in 1:00.34. The Islanders 200-meter freestyle relay team of Erin Crandall, Stephanie Hammond, Williamson and Grace Wold earned victory with a 1:49.12 race. Wold picked up another win in the 100-meter breaststroke race with a time of 1:13.01. In the 400-meter freestyle relay event, the Mercer Island team of Deiparine, Pak, Hammond and Madeline Chandless qualified for the state meet with a time of 3:05.03.

The swim team was off this week, but faced Woodinville at home on Tuesday, after Reporter deadline, and takes on Inglemoor tomorrow afternoon at Mary Wayte Pool starting at 3:30 p.m.

Volleyball team steps up to two league wins

The girls volleyball team picked up two wins last week, beating Bellevue High School in three straight games and Liberty in four games. The Islanders advanced to a 3-1 league record and 4-3 overall.

Against the Wolverines, the Islanders finished with final scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-13.

Junior setter Ariel Dewey had four aces during the win, as did teammate Kaylia Balinbin, and freshman Lorial Yeadon had five. The team was unstoppable at the net, picking up a team total of 29 kills during the games. Balinbin recorded the team high of 11 kills, while junior Erin McKiernan had seven, Sabrina Rasmussen had six and Yeadon dunked five of her own over the net.

Last Thursday, the Islanders hosted Liberty and finished the evening in four games with a 3-1 final for the win. The final scores were 25-17, 25-18, 28-26 and 25-22.

Dewey finished the night with six kills, 40 assists as the setter and four aces, while teammate Balinbin had 15 kills against the Patriots and three aces. Yeadon had 10 kills at the net and 11 digs during the match, McKiernan finished with nine kills and Rasmussen had eight overall.
