Help Eastside Baby Corner

On Saturday, May 10, the Kiwanis Club of Mercer Island will be collecting items for Eastside Baby Corner between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Albertsons. Items needed for children from birth to age 12 include: baby foods, diapers, clothing and toiletries. Cash and checks will also be accepted.

Food drive

Letter carriers will be collecting non-perishable food items on Saturday, May 10, as a part of their annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive. Residents are asked to place food items near their mail box for pick up.

Girl Scout dinner

The members of Girl Scout Troop 1047 are holding a spaghetti dinner between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 4400 86th Ave. S.E.

Viva la France

The 7th annual “Soirée à Thonon” is between 8 and 11 p.m., May 10, at Chuck and Ruth Hansing’s residence. An evening of desserts, wines, and entertainment is the annual fundraiser for Mercer Island Sister City Association and its scholarship fund. Jane Meyer Brahm, 232-0701.

Phantom tickets

The Fine Arts Committee of the Mercer Island School District is selling tickets until May 18, for “Phantom of the Opera” at the Paramount Theatre in September. The tickets are $10. Proceeds will help support MISD fine arts education. Go to www.mifineartsed.org to find out more.

Globalization and education

Mercer Island School District parents and educators are hosting Yong Zhao, Ph.D., from Michigan State University, who will talk about the impact of globalization on education. The event is at 7 p.m., May 13, at the high school.
