On Sunday, May 4, the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center will commemorate Yom Hashoah (Day of Holocaust Remembrance) with a communitywide interfaith event. A short memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at the site of the Holocaust Memorial at the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island.

On Sunday, May 4, the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center will commemorate Yom Hashoah (Day of Holocaust Remembrance) with a communitywide interfaith event. A short memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at the site of the Holocaust Memorial at the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island.

People will then walk across the street to Herzl-Ner Tamid for the program at 3:30 p.m. Special guests will participate in a candle-lighting ceremony. For information, go to www.wsherc.org.

May is Older Americans Month

The Mercer Island Senior Commission launches “Older Americans Month” with a special showcase at the Mercer Island Library. Entitled “Connecting The Generations,” the display can be viewed through the month of May, the traditional Older Americans Month since the 1960s.

Summer School

Registration for summer school classes is underway for Crest through May 22. For information on classes, fees and more, go to www.misd.k12.wa.us and click on the Crest Learning Center link.

Crest festivities

The annual Crest Fest and plant sale will be held 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 2 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3.

Part of the celebration on Friday includes the first annual Crest Film Fest and Poetry Slam. On Saturday, students will be selling organic veggies, hanging baskets, flowers and herbs.

In addition, the math classes will be hosting a coffee stand and bake sale as well as selling T-shirts and garden stepping stones.

Finally, come view student art work, essays, poetry, and more. Rumor has it there will be the first-ever air guitar competition, live musicians, and maybe even karaoke. The grand finale will be an ultimate frisbee match.
