Filing closed Friday, June 11, for candidates wishing to file for office for the upcoming August primary and November general election. Three from Mercer Island are among those filing for open positions for the Washington state 41st Legislative District.

For state senator, Mercer Island City Councilman Steve Litzow, a Republican, has filed to run against the incumbent, Democrat attorney Sen. Randy Gordon, of Bellevue, who was appointed to the job in December to replace former Sen. Fred Jarrett from Mercer Island, who left to work for the King County Council. The winner will finish Jarrett’s term. The seat will be up for grabs again in 2012.

For state representative Pos. 1, incumbent Sen. Marcie Maxwell, a Democrat from Renton who works as a real estate agent, has filed to retain her seat. She is opposed by Islander UW physician Peter J. Dunbar, who lists himself a Republican.

There are three candidates registered for state representative Pos. 2. They include Mercer Island resident and incumbent Democrat, Judy Clibborn; Stephen Stradler, a Republican and software consultant from Bellevue, and Orion S. Webster, who lists himself as an Independent, of Renton.

The primary is set for Aug. 17. Ballots are to be mailed on July 30. The general election is set for Nov. 2. Ballots will be mailed on Oct. 15. There are no Mercer Island City Council positions up for election this fall, and no seats on the Mercer Island School District Board of Directors expire this year.
