The Mercer Island track and field teams sent three athletes to the National Invitational meet Archadia near Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday.

Defending Washington state pole vault champion Bryce Borer led the three athletes by placing eighth overall with a height of 14 feet, seven inches.

“I am just trying to get higher every day,” said Borer, who will compete in pole vault next year for the University of Washington. “We have some great coaches. I think we have all gotten off to a good start this spring.”

Islanders Phoebe Merritt and Quinn Chasan also represented Mercer Island at the meet. Both runners competed in the 800-meter, with Merritt finishing in a time of 2:21.62, while Chasan finished with a time of 1:59.64.

On Thursday, the Islanders hosted 4A Eastlake High School, and both the boys and girls teams lost during the meet despite some impressive individual results and missing Borer, Merritt and Chasan from the lineup.

Boys

The Mercer Island boys team was competitive against the bigger school, but lost 79-66.

The Islanders were led by senior Ed Page, who took first in two individual events. Page won the discus with a distance of 125.4 feet and the shot put with a distance of 36 feet, 5 inches. Page also placed third in the pole vault.

Islander Brad Idzik won the 110 hurdles with a time of 17 seconds, while Tyler Benster took first in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:29.

The 3,200-meter went to Andy Wingerson with a time of 10:53.

Islander Jordan Turner won the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 3.5 inches, while Mike Fishman won the javelin with a distance of 154 feet, 16 inches.

Girls

The Mercer Island girls team didn’t fare as well in the scoring against Eastlake, getting doubled up 100-50.

Six Islanders took first place. Islander senior Janelle Chow won the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 1.5 inches, but did not compete in the long jump.

“As a captain, I just want to help teach the younger athletes how to be successful and give them the skills they need,” said Chow.

The long jump went to Mercer Island’s Jordan Esteld, with a distance of 16 feet.

“I do think we have a chance to win KingCo,” said Merritt. “We have a lot of potential that hasn’t come out yet. We just need to train well.”

Islander Carly Anderson won the javelin with a distance of 80 feet, six inches, while Monica Lee took first in the discus with a distance of 95 feet, four inches.

Islander runners took first in two races. Cora Miller won the 300-meter low hurdles with a time of 51.1 seconds, while Lindsay Benster took first in the 3,200-meter with a time of 11:23.
