Mercer Island City Council member Wendy Weiker announced April 9 her campaign for Washington State House of Representatives in the 41st Legislative District with the support of retiring Rep. Judy Clibborn (D-Mercer Island).

“I admire Wendy’s passion for serving our communities. She has the ability to work collaboratively and make a positive impact on our quality of life,” Clibborn said. “I know that she will work hard for us and get results in Olympia. I’m excited to endorse her for state representative.”

Weiker is a public relations professional, working on community engagement for both private companies and nonprofits. Currently, she is King County outreach manager at Puget Sound Energy. In addition to serving on the Mercer Island City Council, she represents the Sound Cities Association on the King County Conservation District and Emergency Management Advisory Boards. Weiker just completed six years of service as a board member of EarthShare Washington.

“In Olympia, I plan to focus on education, transportation, reducing gun violence, and the environment,” said Weiker. “I hope to carry on the legacy of Rep. Clibborn – one of the most highly respected public servants that our state has seen.”

Before joining the City Council, she served on the Mercer Island Utility Board, was a member of the Mercer Island Town Center Visioning group, and was an active volunteer with PTAs at three schools in the Mercer Island School District.

“Wendy’s thoughtful dedication to serving our communities will make her an effective state representative,” said Renton Mayor Denis Law. “I’m proud to endorse her.”

Weiker holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and recently completed the two-year Leadership Eastside program.

“I appreciate Wendy’s city government experience and broad understanding of our complicated and interconnected Eastside issues,” said Sammamish Mayor Emeritus Don Gerend. “She has my endorsement and I look forward to her representing us in Olympia.”

Wendy and her husband, Aric, a high school teacher in the Bellevue School District, have lived on the Eastside for nearly 15 years and are now enjoying parenting two teenagers.
