The Islander boys lacrosse team picked up a big victory Friday at Bellevue High School as they defeated the Wolverines 11-9. The win vaults Mercer Island into first place in the division.

The Islanders were led by Greg Mahony’s three goals on offense and the play of goalkeeper Adam Bowen, who finished the game with 12 saves. Other scoring players for Mercer Island included Mike Choe (2), A.J. Ellis (2) and Taylor Dawson. The Islanders put themselves ahead early during the second half 8-5 and never looked back. The Wolverines attempt at a comeback came up short in front of the home crowd.

The division win comes on the heels of the Islander annihilation of Lakeside 19-2 Wednesday. Mahony had his biggest day thus far, scoring six goals and adding two assists. Ellis scored four goals, while Dawson and Steven Frankel each added three goals.

Mercer Island now holds a 6-1 record with the only loss coming to Bainbridge Island to open the season.

The Islanders next game will be Thursday in California against California’s 2006 state champion Torrey Pines. The game is apart of a tournament that includes all three West Coast state championship teams from 2006 and the runner up from California.

Mercer Island’s next home game will be at 8 p.m. on April 20 against Vashon Island.
