Fourth-grade basketball team takes second

A Mercer Island basketball team competing in the 4th grade division placed second in the Seattle AAU tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.

The Islanders stingy man-to-man defense was the key in the first game as the team started the tournament with a 29-18 victory over a tough Emerald City squad. In game two the Islanders were defeated soundly by the Inner City Players (ICP) from Portland, Ore. The pressure defense from the ICP team created numerous turnovers as ICP ran away with a 37-11 victory.

The Islanders rebounded from the loss with a strong game on Saturday against the Seattle Smoke. The Islanders jumped to an early 8-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 38-22 victory. The win qualified the Islanders for a rematch with Portland’s ICP team for the championship. In the championship game on Sunday, the Islanders stayed close early, trailing 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. But the relentless pressure from ICP was more than the Islanders could handle and ICP gradually pulled away for a 40-20 win and first place finish.
