Girls team participates in UW shooting clinic

The Mercer Island Girls fifth grade Select Team participated in a Shooting Clinic with the UW Husky Women’s Basketball Team and their new coaching staff, led by new head coach Tia Jackson. The girls won this clinic by selling the most tickets to the student vs. teacher game last spring.

Mudcats Win Championship

The Mercer Island Little League Mudcats won the Mercer Island/Bellevue Crossover championships Coast Softball Division. The Mudcats, which have players ranging in age from 9 to 11 all from Mercer Island, went into single elimination tournament as the second lowest seed and proceeded to win three games. They defeated the regular season champions Nationals, from Bellevue, in the championship 11-9.

The Mudcats were the only team in the Mercer Island Little League program to win a Crossover Championship. Caroline Dillon and Sofija Raisys provided strong pitching performances throughout the playoffs. The team is coached by Tom White and Wally Boos.

MI Power 10U defends championship

The MI Power 10U baseball team, despite losing seven players from last year’s champions who aged up to the Bronco (11-12) Division, coasted to a 4-0 record in the 2007 Bellevue Pony Mustang playoff tournament to defend its title as league champion.

This year’s team of 11 players consisted of eight kids who are a league age minimum of 9 years old in the challenging 9 to 10 Mustang Division. The championship game was a 9-2 victory over the Storm, a select Eastside team.

For the season, the 10U Power team compiled a 34-4 overall record, including two tournament championships and some interleague play. The team surpassed several of its goals set out at the beginning of the season, batting .455 as a team and recording an on-base percentage of .532. The pitching staff struck out 319 batters and allowed only 74 earned runs over the course of 38 games.

Mercer Island Hot Shotz addition to Hoopfest

The Mercer Island Hot Shotz, comprised of eighth-graders Lindsay Benster, Lauren Ellis, Sarah Marr and Carly Andersen participated in the Spokane Hoopfest competition and were not included in the July 4 issue of the Reporter.

Summer Celebration! 3-on-3 basketball tourney

Summer Celebration’s annual kickoff, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament is back. This year’s tournament will be Friday, July 13 and is being organized by the Mercer Island Girl’s and Boy’s Basketball Booster Clubs and parents. Games will be played at the Community Center at Mercerview gym. The tournament will be modeled after the Spokane Hoopfest tournament with the goals in future years to acquire outdoor hoops and get the games back outside, possibly downtown Mercer Island.

Due to the limited amount of courts, there will be only four divisions: Boys and Girls fourth (third graders eligible), fifth, sixth and seventh grade (as of fall 2007). Entry deadline: Tuesday, July 3. Space is limited. Go to www.migb.org for registration forms and details.
