Islander girls basketball take eight at state

The Mercer Island girls basketball team came back to the Island with a trophy and a new sense of normal today.

“Our seniors saw us through the toughest times and because of that being competitive is now expected for our younger girls,” said Mercer Island head coach Jamie Prescott.

Mercer Island finished the season with a 67-44 loss to Franklin Saturday at the Tacoma Dome, but none of the team members were sad as they hoisted the eighth place trophy.

“Some days the shots just don’t fall,” said Prescott.

The Islanders as a team shot just 19 percent from inside the three point arch and 10 percent from beyond. In contrast, Mercer Island hit a state tournament record 11 three-pointers during the consolation semifinal on Friday.
