Islanders boys golfers notch 3A KingCo title

The Mercer Island High School boys golf team powered through 18 holes to secure the 3A KingCo title on Oct. 14 at Snohomish Golf Course.

Senior and team captain Ethan Evans led the way by golfing a 69 to earn medalist honors. Elliott Hoang scored a 74 and then Evan Otte, Wonjoon Seo and Spencer Smith each scored 78s to give the Islanders the combined winning score of 299 with Bellevue trailing close behind with 302. Brian Murdock was one of the “individualist” players with a solid score of 84.

Seven high schools consisting of 42 players participated in the all-day tournament. The top four teams, Mercer Island, Bellevue, Liberty and Interlake, advance to the district tournament, which will be held on Oct. 25 at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent. The top five teams from KingCo and Metro and high-placing individuals notch spots in the state championship tournament next May.

The Mercer Island golf team went 9-1 this season and collectively averaged just 5-over par for its matches. On Sept. 30, the team tied a KingCo record and set a school record scoring 7-under par against Hazen.

“It’s a young and talented group and I’m proud to be coaching them” said head coach Tyson Peters.
