After winning a stellar win at the district meet on Monday, the Mercer Island girls golf team are busy celebrating not only the district win, but the trip to next week’s state event.

The Islanders took the SeaKing crown with a team score of 76.5, tying the previous record.

Chelsea Saelee was the tournament medalist with a score of 75. The Riverbend Golf Course in Kent has a par of 72.

Teammate Haley Chinn finished third with an 80, while Kayce Ogishima was fifth overall with an 86. Jolie Shen took 12th with a 91.

The second place team at the meet was Mount Si, scoring 35 team points.

With the win, the team heads to Spokane next week, for Tuesday’s first round of the state event. The girls will play at Liberty Lake golf course, while the boys will play at Meadow Wood golf course.

Islanders head coach Don Papasedero said it was a great win for the girls, and that he wanted to acknowledge alumni and their families for the ground work they laid.

“Considering the success this team has had over the years I just wanted to ask all the alumni and their parents to connect me. I have some messages for them,” said the coach. “The hard work and the legacy they left behind allowed these girls to go forward. It’s great that it’s lasted so long.”

The 2011 team went undefeated this season, winning the KingCo title and the district title, while breaking scoring records along the way.

“Celebrating these girls is important, but celebrating the history is just as important,” he said.
