The Mercer Island baseball team secured their spot in the second round of the KingCo tournament on Tuesday evening, thanks to a 10-1 victory over Liberty.

The Islanders will now face Mount Si on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats earned the league’s No. 1 seed going into the playoffs.

The winner of Thursday’s game will face the winner of Thursday’s other KingCo match up between Lake Washington and Sammamish on Friday for the No. 1 seed to state.

Against Liberty on Tuesday, the teams were evenly matched in the first inning with no runs, before the Islanders picked up speed. They scored three in the second and five in the third, to Libtery’s one run. Mercer Island sealed the game in the fifth inning with two runs, while holding off the Patriots.

Max Dammeier pitched for six innings and had one hit and one run on the batting side, while Evan Thompson was 2-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Cameron Ogard was 2-3 with two RBI and a run. Brian Higgins was 2-4 with two RBI and a double.

During regular season meetings with the Wildcats the Islanders are 0-2.

A loss on Thursday would push the Islanders into the consolation bracket Saturday, against the loser of Thursday’s second match. A win would be required to move on to last game of the tournament, which would play for the No. 2 seed to state against a Metro team.
