Two Mercer Island select youth basketball teams won their divisions at the Stanwood AAU tournament over Presidents Day weekend.

Two Mercer Island select youth basketball teams won their divisions at the Stanwood AAU tournament over Presidents Day weekend.

The Mercer Island fifth-grade Maroon team, coached by Carrie Krause and Kara Ralph, won its division after losing its first game of the tournament. The team went on to win three straight games to play Pasco in the title game, a rematch of an earlier season match between the squads.

The Islanders started with a 9-1 lead, and Mercer Island edged Pasco with a one-point lead at halftime. The team won 33-30.

The sixth-grade select team won its first game of the tournament with a double overtime victory, 29-26, over Club Shock. The team went on to beat Lynden, Inglemoor and Ultimate Basketball Association to get to the finals. The team beat Monroe, 40-24.

The sixth-grade team includes: Anna Luce, Kailee Yen, Gracie Cannon, Adya Kumar, Brooke Fitzwilson, Josie Blakeslee and Kate Daugherty (not pictured). The team is coached by head coach Eddie Miles and assistant Coach Stephanie Friesen.
The fifth grade team includes: Kelly Behrbaum, Aolani Calderon, Macy Mounger, Rachel Silke, Maive Akins, Emily Arron, Jessie Stenberg, Claire Mansfield and Jackie Stenberg. The team is coached by head coach Carrie Krause, assisted by Kara Ralph.
