MIHS boys and girls tennis players headed to state

Eleven Mercer Island High School tennis players will compete at the 3A state boys and girls championships on May 26-27 at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

On the girls’ side, there’s doubles teams of Lindsey Whelan/Jaya Manhas (first at district) and Rachel Garton/Chloe DeGracia (second at district).

For the boys, there’s Gian Manhas at singles, and doubles teams of Ajay Manhas/Nathan Wen, Connor Leung/Sam Dilworth and Brandon Chew/Noah Perlman.

The girls won both the 3A KingCo conference title and tournament crown. They amassed an 11-1 league record and 12-1 overall mark and placed second at district.

The doubles squad of Violet Kinney/Tiphenn Dumont finished fourth in the KingCo tournament and qualified as the alternate doubles team for district.

Head girls coach Jacquie Hartmann, who was named 3A KingCo co-coach of the year, said that her team “established four guiding principles of motivation, inspiration, grit and teamwork to drive our performance and mindset this season. All the players truly embraced them and we believe that led to our team success and a good experience for all.”

Islander all-leaguers were: Garton (singles first team), DeGracia (singles second team), Manhas/Whelan (doubles first team) and Garton/DeGracia (doubles first team).
