On Feb. 8, the Mercer Island High School boys wrestling team was crowned KingCo Champions. The Islanders captured the title over the weekend at the WIAA KingCo 3A District Wrestling Tournament at Juanita High School. Mercer Island dominated the competition, taking on teams from six schools, including Bellevue, Inglemoor, Liberty, Sammamish, Interlake and Highline.
MIHS secured the win with a team total of 217 points over second place Bellevue’s 199 points. Head coach David Woo said the athletes’ hard work and effort over the season has paid off: “The MI wrestling team confirmed that not only are they contenders, but top level wrestlers in the state.”
This is the first time in over a decade that Mercer Island wrestling has earned KingCo’s top prize. In addition to the team award, MIHS wrestlers also took titles in six weight classes and qualified 11 wrestlers to the WIAA State Championships.
Coach Woo, who is in his second year at MIHS, shifted the focus this season by taking the team to some of the region’s most competitive tournaments. The approach seems to have paid off: “It is extremely impressive how many athletes qualified for state this year and we’re all very excited. I want this to become the norm because these kids have shown tremendous growth and I believe this is only the beginning.”
Final 3A KingCo District Championships individual results: (106 pounds) Mathew Tran – 1st Place; (138 pounds) Lincoln Woods – 1st Place; (144 pounds) Gordon Gibson – 1st Place; (150 pounds) Max Martin – 1st Place; (157 pounds) Chase Warnick – 1st Place; (165 pounds) Luke Sincock – 1st Place; (138 pounds) Alex Chapman – 2nd Place; (157 pounds) Levi Jones – 2nd Place; (175 pounds) Beckim Nason – 3rd Place; (132 pounds) Connon Flume – 4th Place; (150 pounds) Andy Wei – 4th Place.
