MIHS wrestling squad wins Relentless VI Tournament

Six Mercer Island High School (MIHS) wrestlers notched individual titles and the Islander squad won the team championship at the Relentless VI Tournament on Jan. 28 at Chief Sealth High School.

MIHS amassed 166.5 points and second-place Chief Sealth grabbed 121 points in the 11-team tourney.

Islander champs were: Leo Garry at 106 pounds; Gordon Gibson at 120; Lincoln Woods at 126; Chase Warnick at 145; Clark Koopman at 152; and Liam Watson at 182.

Other placers were: Jordan Benitez, second at 113; Creed Finifrock, third at 132; Ethan Chang, third at 138 B; Norman Geoghagan, third at 145; Magnus Dorre, fourth at 106; Maxwell Martin, fourth at 138; and Keaton Hey, fourth at 145.

Tops with victories this season are Gibson with a 22-3 record, Woods at 18-1 and Warnick at 18-6.

Next up is the 3A KingCo sub-regional tournament, which will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Juanita High School. Spectators will be allowed to attend. The top six finishers in each weight class will advance to the regional tournament in Hermiston, Oregon, on Feb. 12.

The Mat Classic XXXIII state tournament is set for Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome.
