When the Chicago Cubs needed another win, Mercer Island’s Matthew Boyd was there to help deliver the goods.
The lefty starter pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball on Oct. 9 as the Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-0, in game four of the National League Division Series at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Brewers won the tie-breaking game five, 3-1, on Oct. 11 in Milwaukee.
Boyd, who struck out six batters and gave up two hits and three walks, was fired up walking off the field after each inning he pitched.
“The atmosphere was amazing tonight. I think we’ve got the best fans in baseball and it was electric. We’ve been feeding off that since April, but tonight was another level and that was super special,” Boyd said in a press conference streamed on mlb.com.
“It makes it a great place to play when you’re a Cubbie and it’s a hard place to play when you’re not. And it’s special,” added Boyd, who praised catcher Carson Kelly for calling a stellar game.
