Mercer Island High School graduate Daniel Shields was named the Conference Carolinas player of the week for men’s lacrosse.
It has been a battle this season for the Mercer Island girls basketball team. The team that fought its way into the KingCo tournament, then battled uphill through the district tournament, only to face one of the top teams in the must win regional round. The season long battle paid off on Friday night when the Islanders beat Everett, the No. 1 team out of District 1. The final score was 57-44 for Mercer Island.
Eastside FC coach Michelle French has been named the head coach for the U.S. Under-20 women’s national team on Thursday, Feb. 21.
Mercer Island High School graduate Max Franklin, who plays for the Washington University men’s tennis team in St. Louis, has been named to the United States Maccabiah men’s tennis open team. The team will participate in the 19th annual World Maccabiah Games held July 17-30 in Israel.
Five members of the Mercer Island High School wrestling team competed in the 25th annual Mat Classic in Tacoma over the weekend.
Four members of the Mercer Island gymnastics team will compete in the 3A state individual gymnastics meet this weekend.
A year after falling to Lakeside at the SeaKing district swim meet, the Mercer Island boys swim and dive team won the crown. The team finished the meet with a score of 295, beating second place Bellevue which had 226 points and third place Lakeside with 206.
Though Mercer Island girls basketball team made a run in the second half of the girls KingCo championships on Thursday against Bellevue, the earlier lead was too great for the Islanders to overcome. Mercer Island lost 61-54 to the Wolverines.
The Mercer Island boys basketball team beat Bellevue in the KingCo tournament finals on Thursday at Bellevue College. The final score was 51-47 for the Islanders.
Several former players with the Mercer Island Youth Soccer Club have earned state and national awards.
The Mercer Island gymnastics team finished in fourth place as a team on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the 3A KingCo championships.
The Mercer Island boys basketball team finished the regular season with a win over Lake Washington on Thursday, Jan. 31. With the victory the team wrapped a one-loss KingCo season, winning the league title. The team finished the regular season 13-1.
