Midlakes swimming league gives MIHS a big push: Watching growth of Island athletes is impressive

It should come as no surprise that the Mercer Island High School swim teams are title contenders each year. While the girls have been close the past five years, the Islander boys have taken two consecutive state titles. It was recently announced that the team won the national title this year, as well. And while all of this has come under the tutelage of high school swim coach Jeff Lowell, it starts at the club level.

Special treatment at a young age is root of sports problems

Mike Vick, Adam “Pacman” Jones, Barry Bonds, Tim Donaghy, the Cincinatti Bengals, Tour de France etc ... professional sports scandals have cut across every arena this year. The situations that athletes have put themselves into are nothing new to sports fans. Athletes in trouble with the law or cheating has become an epidemic. And the trouble is not just at the professional level.

MI Rec. league softball is more about comraderie than competition

On beautiful nights during the summer, Homestead Field transforms from a lazy old baseball field into a place of excitement. The entire park seemingly comes alive with the crack of the bat, laughter and dugout chatter. These sounds are typically caused by energetic members of local Little League baseball teams, who are thrilled to be on the field. However, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night in the summer, the buzz is caused by members of the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Softball Program.
