Junior tennis players battle for titles

The USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional Tennis Championships featuring over 300 players from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, northern Idaho and British Columbia took place Aug. 23-26 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. with many Islanders in competition. Players qualified for the event by winning at least one match in a USTA PNW Junior Championship level tournament. The Mercer Island competitors were Matthew Ellis and Erica Leong (16-year-old division); Jordan Smith and Eric Snyder (14-year-old division); Nora Tan, Henry Smith and Zack Elliott (12-year-old division); and Ben Elliott (10-year-old division). Zack Elliott (and Mitch Stewart, Federal Way) were the 12U Doubles Champions. Competing in the singles finals was Zack Elliott and in the quarterfinals were Matthew Ellis and Ben Elliott. Competing in the doubles semifinals were Jordan Smith and Matthew Ellis.

ETL/Cascade boys basketball select team

The ETL/Cascade boys select basketball programs for boys grades 5 through 8 will be holding try-outs at the MIHS Gyms on the following:

Sunday, Sept. 23 — grades 5 and 7 from 12-2:30 p.m. and grades 6 and 8 from 3-5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 26 — grades 5 and 7 from 3:30-6 p.m. and grades 6 and 8 from 6:30 -9 p.m.

* Please note all players interested in trying out need to attend both sessions unless other arrangements have been made in advance with the coaches.

There will be a parent information session at the MIHS Library on Sept. 18 starting at 7 p.m.

Soccer team takes BU-11F championship

A Mercer Island Youth Soccer Club boys’ U-11 summer recreational soccer team captured the BU-11F division championship of the Federal Way Blast Off tourney Aug. 10-12. The team scored three convincing wins over Premiere soccer clubs from Tacoma-Pierce County FC, Mount Rainier FC and Federal Way FC en route to beating Tacoma-Pierce County FC a second time in the championship game by a score of 9-1. Mercer Island outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 45-3 over the four-game tournament with 11 of 14 players contributing goals.

Eastside Blue edges Mercer Island Fire for soccer championship

The Eastside FC 12U girls’ soccer team completed a successful summer tournament season by edging the Mercer Island Soccer Club 1-0 in the championship of the Sky River Soccer Tournament held Aug. 16-19 in Monroe. Eastside rolled into the championship game undefeated and did not give up a goal enroute to defeating Lake Hills 1-0, Monroe 8-0, Renton Apex 4-0 and finally Issaquah Arsenal 1-0.

The MISC Fire gained their way to the championship, by going 2-1-1 in bracket play. In the championship neither side could gain the advantage until midway through the second half when the Fire’s Emily Lightfoot scored the game’s first goal.

Eastside fought back with a late goal sending the game into a shoot out. The outcome was not decided until the fifth and final kick when Eastside’s goalie, Makenna Pellerin, knocked away a shot.

The win was Eastside’s second championship of the summer and third finals appearance. Mercer Island members of Eastside include: Merideth Adams, Emily Bassett, Kianna Chang, Tatum Odegard, Makenna Pellerin, Anna Schroedl and Alida Scalzo.

Mary Wayte Pool swim lessons

Adapted aquatic lessons for children and adults with special needs are now being offered.

Instructors are trained through the Children’s Hospital Adapted Aquatics program. Lessons are one-on-one for optimal individualization. Cost is $9 per lesson. Call 296-4370 for more information.
