Barracudas and Islanders take silver medals

Barracudas and Islanders take silver medals

The Mercer Island Barracudas basketball team won a silver medal in the Masters 7 Division of the Special Olympics King County Regional Basketball tournament held Feb. 11 in Issaquah. The Islanders, coached by Island resident Bob Wells, also won a silver medal in the Masters 4 Division.

The Barracudas were comprised of Islanders Brad Morse, Riley Heffernan, Gavin Halbett, Drew Petschel, Scott Wells, Matt Siderius, Shannon Stamper, Michelle Frietag, Tyler Olson and Ellie McKenna. Their coaches were Jim Kroeger and Kurt Frietag.

Island soccer team takes Commissioner’s Cup

Mercer Island Youth Soccer Club’s Boys U-16 Select team, the Renegades, won the Fred Meyer Commissioner’s Cup at Shoreline Stadium on Feb. 17. The Renegades finished in first place during their 13-game season, which began in September. The Island team won five consecutive games against teams from around the State to win the tournament championship.

Mercer Island residents on the team included Macken Bennett, Ross DiJulio, Alex Emick, Phillip Foster, Jamie Gaffney, Matt Jensen, Joe Kelly, Forrest Marowitz, Luke Owens, Josh Radman, Brady Regan, Colin Ramsey, Evan Sadler, Derek Schulte, Galen Thomas, Shaun Thomson and from Issaquah Taylor Warfield.

The Renegades were coached by Doug DiJulio, assistant coach, Eric Gaffney and trained by Samir Bjelanovic.

Crow places 22nd at regional gymnastic meet

Mercer Island resident Tonayo Crow competed in the Hard Rock Invitational gymnastics meet held in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 9-11. Crow placed 22nd overall in the Level 5 Pre-teen division with an All-Around score of 33.10. On her events, she placed 16th on vault with a score of 8.85, 18th on bars with a score of 8.375, 27th on beam with a score of 8.15, and 29th on floor exercise with a score of 7.725.

Crow also competed in the Seattle Sweet Meet held at the Lynnwood Convention Center on Feb. 4-6. Crow placed 4th overall in the Level 5 Junior B division with an All-Around score of 33.575. She placed fifth on vault (7.6), fifth on bars (8.5), second on beam (8.825) and fifth on floor exercise (8.65).

The Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club is now registering for spring soccer teams. The teams have one practice and one game per week at Islander Middle School, Island Park Elementary, Tyee Middle School (Bellevue) or Odle Middle School (Bellevue). Registration ends today or when the programs are at capacity.

If the participant would like to be on the same team as a specific friend or coach, please enter the information when registering. MIBGC will try to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee they will be met.

The spring soccer program will conform to the standards of the Washington State Youth Soccer Association. The spring soccer program is a recreational league designed to teach the fundamentals of soccer. The older divisions will play in a cooperative league with the Bellevue Boys & Girls Club.

A registration fee of $80, plus current annual membership, is required.
