Pair found with gunshot wounds at Luther Burbank identified as Cle Elum couple

Police still investigating motive.

Mercer Island police have identified a couple, found in a car with gunshot wounds in Luther Burbank Park in mid July, as Cle Elum married couple Andrew Wright and Heidi Hopen-Wright.

On July 13, MIPD officers found the pair, both 47, in a vehicle in the main parking area of the park. They were transported to Harborview Medical Center, where they died from their injuries.

While investigators continue to work with family and friends to establish a motive for the shooting, initial findings show that Andrew fired both shots using a gun that he owned. Police found the gun at the scene.

“Right now there’s nothing pointing directly toward a motive at this point,” MIPD commander Jeff Magnan said. “We may never know. Sometimes these things unfortunately end that way.”
