We need to make sure Mercer Island stays pedestrian-friendly | Letter

In regard to the Reporter’s recent article, “Mercer Island police urge pedestrian safety after several collisions,” while pedestrians certainly have more to lose in a collision with a car, let’s not forget the responsibility of drivers to look for pedestrians.

I recently walked through the Town Center around 5 p.m. with a friend. I was wearing a highly visible, reflective, bright yellow cycling jacket. Four times my friend and I had to back out of a crosswalk because cars were speeding through intersections without looking for pedestrians.

The focus of our walk became staying safe and avoiding crossing the street. We need to make sure our Island stays friendly to pedestrians.

The responsibility is on cars and pedestrians. Given the recent increase in collisions, I believe it is also incumbent upon our City Council to ensure our roads and intersections are safe for pedestrians.

Three serious collisions in one week is unacceptable.
