The Mercer Island girls tennis team won its third consecutive match in three days, winning its nonconference matchup with Garfield 5-2 Wednesday, April 2 at Mercer Island High School. The Bulldogs scored a couple of singles wins with Garfield’s Alexia Fite outlasting Lydia Venditti 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2), and Alex Ferry getting past Melanie Lee 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). Mercer Island’s Gabby Venditti won over Ariel Steinback 6-1, 6-2 and Caroline Hamilton defeated Caroline Sharp 6-0, 6-0. In the doubles matches, Sammy and Sarah Sweet defeated Sophie Manum and Natalie Sharp 6-1, 6-2. Miji Suhr and Catherine Seifert beat Celine Steinback and Sakura Kishiro 6-4, 6-4, and Julia Glick and Kristine Melin won over Ava Zech and Clair Baker 6-4, 6-2. The Islanders are back at it again Thursday, taking on Seattle Prep in the final match of a four-day stretch. The match begins at 3:45 p.m. at Mercer Island High School.

Fastpitch survives Sammamish

Mercer Island fastpitch earned its first KingCo Conference win of the season, surviving Sammamish 13-11 Wednesday at Sammamish High School. Makenna Pellerin went 5-5, hitting a home run and batting in 8 runs while Morgan Peyou went 3-4 with a triple and scoring 4 runs. Mercer Island will take on Interlake at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 4 at Interlake High School.
