MIHS grad signs with Seahawks
Mercer Island High School graduate David Kirtman signed a one-year contract with the Seahawks last week.
Kirtman, a University of Southern California grad, played for two seasons with the Seahawks after being drafted in the fifth round in 2006. After being released last year, he spent time on the San Diego practice squad, the 49ers roster, playing one game before becoming a member of the New Orleans practice squad.
Youth football registration closes soon
Registration for the MI Boys & Girls Club youth tackle football program will close on May 15. The program, for kids ages 7-14, has six divisions based on an age-weight formula. Practices begin on Aug. 11, and games are scheduled for Saturdays between Sept. 5 and Oct. 31. The Boys & Girls Club also has a flag football program in the fall. Registration will begin for the program this summer.
From July 20-23, the new Mercer Island High School football coach, Brett Ogata, along with his staff and some players, will host a football camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Islander Stadium. The high school coaches will also offer player development program for younger players through the Boys & Girls Club. The program’s goal is to help players improve speed, agility and football fundamentals.

Baseball earns academic honors
The Mercer Island High School baseball team was named the 3A state academic champion this spring. The team, with 17 participants, had an average grade point average of 3.4.
Gesser named Eastside Catholic coach
Former Washington State University quarterback Jason Gesser has been named the new Eastside Catholic head football coach.
He was a member of the Tennessee Titans, Calgary Stampeders and the Utah Blaze arena football team. He has also served as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Federal Way High School and Franklin Pierce High School. Gesser is also a football analyst for Fox Sports Northwest.
Golf remains unbeaten
The girls golf team finished up the regular season, once again undefeated, after wins over Inglemoor on Tuesday and Ballard on Thursday.
The Islanders beat Inglewood by 23 strokes. Senior captain Lindsay Chinn finished with a 42 and freshman Chelsee Saelee finished overall with a 38.
On Thursday, the Islanders defeated Ballard with a final score of 218. Senior golf captain Lindsay Chinn said that the final KingCo match of the season was good practice for the upcoming postseason events.
Tennis beats Bothell
The MIHS girls tennis team kept their streak alive, beating Bothell High School on Thursday, 9-0.
Chelsea Bailey kept Bothell’s Nicole Henderson from winning a set, going 8-0. In doubles, Michele Zemplenyi and Julia Schubach beat Henderson and A.J. Otti, 8-1.
