The city of Mercer Island’s Parks and Recreation Department is continuing renovation planning for the docks at the Luther Burbank waterfront, officials shared in a July 15 release.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5-9 p.m., boaters and other waterfront users are being encouraged by city officials to participate in a design workshop via Zoom.

The docks, built in 1974, have only about five years of useful service remaining, the release states.

“In addition, the fixed height piers are not useful for smaller boats and don’t serve the needs of most current boaters or the city’s boating programs,” the release adds.

To prepare for future use, the city is looking at possibly reconfiguring one or more of the piers to become floating docks while the remaining pier is repaired, the release states.

Renovations are dependent on possible state and federal grant funding. Earlier this month, Mercer Island applied for some federal grant funding to renovate Luther Burbank Park’s northern pier. The grant, managed by the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program, would fund, if approved, 75 percent of the design and construction costs of the particular project.

Renovations would use the Luther Burbank Park Master Plan as a guide for the design process, the release states.

“The design process will also consider how to make the waterfront more accessible to all users and attractive for the general public,” the release states.

Work itself would probably unfold in 2023 or 2024.

The Aug. 6 workshop, according to the city of Mercer Island’s website, “will discuss how the docks will be rebuilt in a new configuration, with an emphasis on serving small power, sail and paddle craft.”
