AARP Safe Driving Program for adults 50 and older is in two four-hour sessions, starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19 and Tuesday, June 26 at the JCC. Girl Scout Troops are forming for fall. The Mercer Island Girl Scouts, through partnership with trained and committed adults, offers enriching activities for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade. Troops generally have about 10 to15 girls and meet after school, in the evenings or on weekends, depending on leader’s and girls’ schedules. Now is the time to join a Mercer Island Girl Scout troop for the fall, or to consider helping to lead a troop for your daughter.     Mother & daughter book group is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Share ideas, thoughts, controversies and discussion with one another — share a book! The June selection is Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Speak.” Though the book group is open to any interested teen and an accompanying adult, the material and discussion is most suitable for a mature girl aged 14 or older, and an important female adult in her life.

    Book Buddies training and orientation is at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 25. Teens: Help a child learn to love reading and make a friend in the process. Applications are due June 18.

    “The Shoemaker and the Elf,” presented by Mary Shaver’s Marionette Theatre is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28. All ages are welcome to this family program.

    Teen Academic Mentors are available from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. for children in second through eighth grade. Stop by for some casual homework help. High school students are available in nearly every subject.
