Mercer Island Girl Scouts volunteer time, cookies to homeless

On Memorial Day, Girl Scouts from Cadette Troop 44297 of Mercer Island took 120 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the Bread of Life Mission in Pioneer Square. The troop members helped plate 600 barbecue meals for veterans, homeless men, women and some children.

While the troop was selling cookies, they chose their donated sales to go to the homeless of Seattle.

Bread of Life Mission has been providing emergency services to the homeless for 78 years. The Mission serves hot meals and provides night shelter, clothing and help with recovery from substance abuse. Every year, the Mission hosts a Memorial Day event honoring homeless veterans.

The Mission’s Renata Hasle was very happy when the scouts showed up, said troop leader Terese Broccoli. Hasle told the leaders that donations were low this year and they had no desert or fruit to serve, and the 120 boxes of cookies were “really a treat.”
