Mercer Island’s Leap for Green sustainability fair returns this weekend

The city of Mercer Island’s Leap for Green Sustainability Fair returns once again to the Community and Event Center this weekend.

Come join the fun on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine — many activities are indoors, or tented outside.

The fair will include children’s activities such as arts and crafts, a petting zoo, science demonstrations, educational exhibits, live music from longstanding favorite Yaamba Marimba and other bands, nature-based programs, food trucks and much more.

Also returning this year is another display of the city’s growing fleet of alternative fuel and low emissions vehicles and a chance to meet Leap, the event’s frog mascot.

While supplies last, attendees will receive a reusable shopping bag, a countertop food waste bin (for composting), a Leap for Green badge and other educational giveaways.

The fair also offers adults and parents various conservation and sustainability materials, birding tours, green gardening tips, transit and bicycling information and more.

The event began in 2008 to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by promoting environmental practices and activities for kids and adults, and to raise general awareness of local sustainability resources.
