The Mercer Island Visual Arts League will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this week.

The group, which began in 1961, has promoted and inspired art activities in all ages of residents on Mercer Island.

An exhibition of past and present MIVAL members will be on display at the Mercer Island Community Center Gallery until Aug. 5. The exhibit features works from early members of MIVAL, from 1961 until 1986.

A celebration will be held on Thursday, July 21, at the CCMV from noon until 2 p.m. The keynote speaker is Derrick Cartwright, the directory of Seattle Art Museum and Island resident.

Former member of MIVAL and founders of the group will be honored and a silent auction will be held for various pieces.
