Mercer Island High School seniors Lee Cordova and Kate Gunby were honored at a recent Rotary luncheon as “Islanders of the Month” for May.

Cordova, the son of Marc and Beth Cordova, is a member of the National Honor Society and a drum major in the school band.

He has been active in the track and cross country teams. Cordova also has worked with the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Additionally, he has volunteered with the Washington Trails Association and the VOICE program.

Cordova attends classes at the Community High School for Jewish Studies, and does volunteer work for Explorer Search and Rescue with the King County Sheriff’s Office. He also works as a ski instructor with John Mohan Skiing and Snowboarding School. His hobbies include running, hiking, backpacking, and playing the oboe and alto saxophone.

He plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., to study engineering and music.

Gunby, the daughter of Tom Gunby and Janet Kranz Gunby, is a National Honor Society member and treasurer/secretary for the school debate team.

She has been a leader and steering committee member with Bridges, which provides a forum for students to discuss issues important to teens. She is a percussionist and treasurer for the school band and an associated student body liaison to the Mercer Island School Board.

Her community activities include volunteering at the Northwest Women’s Law Center, a non-profit organization that works to gain legal rights for women. Her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, reading, listening to music and writing.

She plans to attend Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and major in political science.
