A jewelry salesman’s vehicle was broken into at the Island Corporate Center on Tuesday afternoon, March 5. A suitcase containing $500,000 in S. Kashi & Sons jewelry was stolen out of the vehicle, a Nissan with a Florida license plate, in the parking lot at 7525 S.E. 24th Street. S. Kashi & Sons is a wholesale company located in New York City. A second suitcase, which contained the victim’s clothes and personal items for the business trip, was also stolen and the total loss was $300.
The 38-year-old salesman had arrived in Seattle from New York the previous day and stopped for a brief break on Mercer Island after showing his company’s jewelry at various jewelry stores in the greater Seattle area. He had carried the piece of luggage with the jewelry in and out of each store, according to the police report. The luggage contained hundreds of costly pieces of jewelry — engagement rings, bridal jewelry, fashion rings and more.
Sometime after 1:44 p.m., the thief shattered the hatchback window of the Nissan. The cost of repair is an estimated $300.
Surveillance cameras on the property captured images that show a dark minivan stopping next to the victim’s vehicle.
