The Mercer Island High School boys soccer and boys track and field teams were named 3A academic state champions for the highest grade-point average in the sport throughout the state by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires. The boys varsity basketball team received the same honor in the winter, as did the boys cross country team in the fall.

“I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “They know that their academics are their first priority and it’s wonderful to see them achieve great things in and out of the classroom.”

The boys track and field team had a combined GPA of 3.6, while boys soccer had a 3.658. Boys basketball had a 3.666 in the winter and cross country had a 3.876 in the fall.

The Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Scholastic Award program is to recognize and reward those teams or groups that maintain a high collective academic standard. It is open to varsity or sub-varsity sports teams, activity squads such as dance & drill and cheer squads, and fine arts groups such as bands, choirs, orchestras, dramatic troupes and forensics teams.
