Occupants of the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island followed security protocol Wednesday night when a second-floor window was broken out with what turned out to be nothing more than rocks.

“We erred on the side of precaution,” said Judy Newman, executive director of the Stroum JCC. “It wasn’t vandalism, just horseplay.”

Newman said everything was fine, that it was just kids who were at the center throwing rocks. She called it a non-event and said that a new window is all they need now.

Earlier this year, vandalism and graffiti were discovered at Northwest Yeshiva High School on the eve of Yom Kippur that included swastikas, references to death camps and gas chambers. Neighbors helped clean up the damage. Two juveniles and one 18-year-old were arrested.
