CHILD school receives a 30-day extension on lease
The School District recently received a request from C.H.I.L.D. Institute’s executive director, Carrie Fannin, to discuss a lease extension for the school beyond its August 31 expiration date. The school needs more time to complete preparations for its new location in Renton. In particular, a permit from the Soos Creek Water District is needed before work is completed and the facility is allowed to open.
On August 12, Superintendent Gary Plano called the water district himself in order to urge a quick resolution to the issue. The district, which approved a similar extension to Country Village Day School, instructed staff to construct a similar agreement with CHILD. The School Board voted to approve the extension but not without commenting on how important it is for demolition and construction to move ahead on schedule for a fourth elementary school as well as other school projects. The superintendent also requested that CHILD provide the district with an updated and revised contractor’s timeline for occupancy at their new, Renton location as well as describing a contingency plan should the school not be ready for occupancy on October 1.
Events will require on-street parking in neighborhoods
Events scheduled for the 2014-15 school year around the Mercer Island High School campus will require parking beyond the capacity of school district parking lots. As a result, on-street parking in neighborhoods around the school will be allowed for the duration of the event. On-street parking in neighborhoods for these events is allowed under a 2007 agreement between the school district, Boys and Girls Club and the City of Mercer Island. A maximum of 30 event days per year are allowed.
Events set for September are as follows:
Sept. 5: Fall Kickoff Assembly (1:30-3:30 p.m.)
Sept. 5 : MIHS football game (7-10:30 p.m.)
Sept. 12: PTSA Welcome Back Coffee (9-11 a.m.)
Sept. 23: Curriculum Night (6-9:30 p.m.)
Sept 26: Football game (7-10:30 p.m.)
Changes will be posted to the district website on the Mercer Island High School page. Contact Todd Kelsay at 236-3337 or at todd.kelsay@mercerislandschools.org for more.
PEAK parking lot to change
The construction of The School District’s Elementary School No. 4 will require the district to redevelop the parking lot at the Boys and Girls Club, PEAK, to accommodate staff parking and parent drop-off for the new school.
The development agreement between the school district and the club allows the district to assign other parking spaces to meet the requirement for 91 parking stalls for the exclusive use of PEAK.
The arrangement was established in 2007, when the city, the district and the club entered into an agreement covering the parking development standards for the the designation of the PEAK Project as a public facility.
