City begins streambank stabilizing project / Briefs

Utilizing streambed structures, Mercer Island Public Works crews recently began stabilizing almost a quarter mile of eroded stream channel that flows into Lake Washington near the 6500 block of East Mercer Way.

Engineers and crews designed the 15 structures made of logs, tree trimmings, stakes and streambed cobble to replace failing sandbags that were installed as a temporary control measure more than 15 years ago. The failure increased sedimentation and negatively impacted habitat in the lake.

“The contractor will return in late fall and winter to complete re-planting work along the banks and at the timber frame structures with native plants and trees,” according to the city.

MIPD

The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) completed its virtual review and accreditation assessment on Sept. 15.

The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs manages the comprehensive accreditation process for police departments every four years, and reviews 134 standards in the areas of use of force, code of conduct, health and safety and more. MIPD will receive its official notification when the Accreditation Commission meets in November.

“The assessment helps ensure that department policies meet the best practices and standards,” according to the city.
