City earns transparency recognition

The League of Women Voters of Seattle recently recognized the city of Mercer Island for meeting high standards of transparency in government.

The League commended the city and City Council for providing announcements and agendas in the local newspaper, opportunities at the beginning of each meeting for citizens to address the Council, and detailed minutes of the meetings; as well as televising the meetings and making information available via the Web site and print media.

“With planning sessions held on Mercer Island and televised meetings, the city has provided chances for citizens to observe and listen and think,” said Myra Lupton, a League of Women Voters member. “In the past, they have held planning sessions as far away as La Conner, so they’ve come a long way.”
