Special to the Reporter
Mercer Island City Council has adopted a new Parks Zone, establishing development regulations for city-owned public park properties.
As part of the creation of the Parks Zone, the council adopted amendments to the city code (Ordinance No. 25C-16) and the comprehensive plan (Ordinance No. 25-17). The new development regulations will ensure that the city’s parks are managed appropriately and in alignment with the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan, the city code and other planning documents. The Parks Zone will take effect on Dec. 31.
The Parks Zone is the second phase of a multi-year project that began with the adoption of the Open Space Zone in 2024. The creation of two separate zones for parks and open space allowed for more specific development regulations for each zone. These zones will protect public parks and open space lands on Mercer Island and ensure their long-term preservation.
