Construction accident kills homeowner

Island man is killed when wall falls on him at home under construction

Mercer Island Police reported that a man was killed on April 8 at his home, which was under construction, at the 8800 block of S.E. 39th Street.

Police said that the property owner, 40-year-old Jack Chen, had stopped by the house to check on construction progress. Workers were attempting to raise a wall, but were unable to get the wall in place and felt it slip.

The workers abandoned their efforts, backing away quickly while the wall fell to the ground. Chen, who had apparently jumped in to assist, was crushed when the wall fell on him.

Workers on site began CPR and continued while police and fire arrived and took over the process. The patient was transported to Overlake hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Chen’s wife and two children were transported to the hospital by firefighters. Chen was a dentist in Renton.

Mercer Island detectives are investigating and the Department of Labor and Industry was notified.
