The MIHS girls Division II team won the state title after beating Issaquah, 14-8, last weekend.

During the Division II lacrosse state finals, the Islanders kept Issaquah from the goal in the first half before Issaquah made an offensive run to score eight goals in the second half. Islander goalie Helen Hansen kept the score from getting any closer as Mercer Island cruised to the state title.

“I owe this all to the girls. They worked hard for this,” said Islander coach Tony D’Alessio. “The key of the game today was to get off fast and get our game going.”

In the Division I state semifinals, MIHS was up against Bainbridge. The final score was 23-5, knocking the Islanders out of the running for the state finals.

Division I finished with a 9-3-2 record.

“I thought it was a really good season,” said Van Der Horn. He said losing 12 seniors last season and introducing younger players to a new level of play made the beginning of the season a bit of a challenge, but the girls were quick to catch on.

Senior Caroline Mahoney and junior Olivia Wold were named to the Division I Washington All-State first team. Mahoney plays midfield and Wold is on defense. On the Division I All-State second team, representing Mercer Island, is defender junior Catherine LaPlant, junior Ellen Haas at midfield and junior Hannah Bahn, who plays offense.

In Division II, the Islanders are represented by Molly Nemerever, a sophomore who plays defense and Loreal Camp, another sophomore who plays midfield. Mercer Island Division II coach Tony D’Alessio was named coach of the year, along with Auburn-Mountainview coach John Tomasi.
