Eye on MI | Grace and beauty

The 120-by-9 foot painted mural is taking shape at the tennis courts at Luther Burbank Park.

Professional mural artist Natalie Oswald puts the finishing touches on a graceful blue heron and brightens the tips of the tail feathers on a pair of Canadian Geese gliding across the 120-by-9 foot painted mural taking shape at the tennis courts at Luther Burbank Park. Other species represented in the art include some busy beavers, those ubiquitous crows and a pair of blue herons.

The project was managed by the Mercer Island Arts Council. Funding was from the “One Percent for Arts” program.

Oswald and her design were chosen from a pool of 30 applicants by a committee of Islanders. Details such as how tennis balls might be seen against the mural were debated as well as cost and color and theme.

Oswald plans to be finished this week.
