This Sunday, June 8, marks the first of the 2014 Farmers Market season. Opening day begins at 10 a.m. and will run till 3 p.m., with vendors and activities throughout the afternoon.

To kickoff the summer months, the market is hosting Garden Days through the end of June, featuring local artists and crafts and products for the garden. Among the vendors this month, is Impwear Home. The Seattle-based company makes colorful print tablecloths and aprons.

There will be wine tasting, a live performance by the folk band the Onlies and lots of lunch options. Kids can join in the fun with DIY pocket gardens at the children’s table.

“I remember on the first day, people poured down the street and bought everything we had, right down to the tablecloths,” said market manager Kai Ottesen of Hedlin Farm, remembering her first year with the market back in 2008. “I think we drove home with a few stray poblano peppers that day, and that was it. Since then, we try to come well stocked.”

She added: “As long as we’ve been coming, people here have asked us regularly how the market is going for us, if it’s worth our while. It’s clear to me the community on Mercer Island supports their farmers market, not just with their dollars, but with their time and effort too, both as volunteers, and just as customers—there’s lots of things people could be doing on a given Sunday, and consistently, they turn out for the market, rain or shine.”

Sunshine and highs of 76 degrees are forecast for Sunday. To see the full list of vendors, recipes for fresh produce and other programming details, visit the Mercer Island Farmers Market website here.
