Fastpitch wins at Interlake
Mercer Island improved to 2-1 in the KingCo standings with a 9-5 win over Interlake Friday, April 4 at Interlake High School. Overall, the Islanders are 6-2 on the season. Morgan Peyou went 4-5, hitting a double and scoring a run for the Islanders. Jane Akiyoshi was 3-4 with a run, and Natalie Ricklefs went 2-3 and also scored for the Islanders. Mercer Island fastpitch will return to action after spring break, taking on Mount Si at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 14 at Mount Si High School.
Boys soccer ties Liberty with PK
Mercer Island boys soccer tied KingCo’s first-place Liberty in overtime Friday with a last-second penalty kick from Ryan Hill. Sean Bender scored in the 18th minute to put the Islanders (3-0-2 in KingCo, 3-1-3 overall) on the board, with Liberty’s Ryan Graham responding in the 33rd minute. The Islanders reclaimed the lead with a strike from Hill in the 57th minute, but the Patriots (4-0-1, 6-0-1) tied the game again with a goal from Ethan Diaz in the 71st minute. Leoul Hancock put the Patriots ahead with a goal in the opening minutes of overtime, but the Islanders drew a penalty in the games waning seconds, setting up Hill’s game-saving kick. Next, the Islanders will take on Mount Si at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 7 at Mount Si High School.
Boys lacrosse crushes Woodinville
Mercer Island boys lacrosse remained undefeated with its 19-2 win over Woodinville Saturday, April 5 at Mercer Island High School. The Islanders improved to 6-0-0 in KingCo and 10-0-0 overall. Brett Bottomley had 5 goals, 3 assists and 7 ground balls for the Islanders, Peter Mahony had 4 goals and 2 assists, and Evan Condon had 3 goals, 1 assist and 6 ground balls for Mercer Island. The lacrosse team will travel to Connecticut during spring break for nonconference competition.
