Though it just opened last month, new store Terra Bella on Mercer Island is already adding features.

The shop, located across the street from Albertsons and next to Veloce Velo, has begun hosting food trucks this week in its parking lot.

“We’re really excited,” said owner Nancy Meade. “Everyone we’ve told about this has been really excited.”

For the time being, the trucks will be in the lot on Tuesdays and Thursdays for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and then for dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“Summer is a really busy time for these guys, so once we get into September-October, we expect to have them here every day, but for now it’s just Tuesdays and Thursdays,” said Steven Meade, Nancy’s husband. “The object is to have every day covered.”

Steven Meade said some of the trucks will just set up shop for the whole day.

Meade said the idea came up not long after moving into the new store’s location from their former shop in the Old Main neighborhood in Bellevue.

“Our old shop used to be on Old Main and we got a lot of walk-bys, people out for lunch or dinner and would stop by,” he said. “It was a big benefit for us, and one of our concerns with coming to Mercer Island is we just don’t have that here. We thought, if it’s not here, why don’t we bring it to us?”

Hallava Falafel, from Georgetown, served lunch on Mercer Island for the first time today. Two additional trucks will join the rotation, including Buns and Evolution Revolution. Meade said the trucks offer a wide variety. He added that they will likely add other trucks in the future, depending on how things go.

“We’ve been talking to a lot of them,” he said.

Meade said they talked with City Hall and got clearance for the trucks to come, saying everyone at the city was “pretty excited” about this addition to the Island.
