The City of Mercer Island has organized a new bike safety class called “Introduction to Bike Commuting: It’s How We Roll.” The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on June 29 at the Community Center.

The Cascade Bicycle Club has agreed to lead the free bike clinic for local cyclists and those interested in biking to work. Commute Program Coordinator, Stephanie Frans, will be instructing the two-hour long class, which will review the rules of the road, riding safety, basic bike maintenance and more.

The course was scheduled a week before the I-90 bridge closes for phase two of the Department of Transportation’s joint-expansion replacement project, thereby helping Islanders who have decided to bike to work in Seattle during the three-week-long closures. DOT crews will close all westbound mainline lanes between July 5 and July 28. All westbound traffic will be condensed into the bridge’s two express lanes. A bike path across the bridge, however, will be open at all times.

Patrons can pre-register for the “Introduction to Bike Commuting” class by calling 275-7609 and using reference class code #10133. Space is limited.
