Believing that the road diet currently being considered by the City Council will reduce or eliminate a traffic problem is akin to asking someone suffering from anorexia to limit their calorie intake. Since research tells us that traffic volume in excess of 17,000 cars per day on a road like Island Crest is a cutoff for the value of road diets like the one being considered, and the recent traffic count on Island Crest was 19,000, we can only expect to see more congestion if this idea is approved. It would result in a single lane of traffic in each direction. Logic suggests that each lane will only hold twice as many cars if the cars follow each other much more closely. This would therefore produce more dangerous conditions than exist presently. To the City Council: Please don’t make the traffic problem that we face every day on Island Crest worse.
