Is it pizza or wings?

The National Restaurant Association reports 48 million Americans expect to order delivery on game day and says the Super Bowl is the busiest day of the year for pizza restaurants, with an expected 4 million pizzas to be sold.

While not the busiest day for his pizza business, it’s still a strong day for Mercer Island resident and Pagliacci co-owner Matt Galvin.

“With the Seahawks, we’ll probably have a bump of 30 percent.”

Galvin said Pagliacci is preparing for the Super Bowl by opening early and of course continuing to promote one of their signature pies, the 12th Man Primo. Pagliacci crew members will be decked in special #12 Seahawk-themed shirts during game, while Galvin’s wife will provide Mardi Gras-style beads in Seahawks colors for all the stores. And they’re hoping to give a special nod to a certain Seahawks running back.

“We’re trying to find every fun pack of Skittles and attach it to every pizza we deliver on Sunday,” Galvin said.

Yet despite the massive number of pizza orders, pizza ranks second as Amercia’s delivery food of choice. In a 2012 survey, the National Restaurant Association reported of the 48 million Americans expected to order delivery on game day, 63 percent expected to order chicken wings and 61 percent to order pizza.

Kyrie Pogrebniak, a lead manager at Mo’s Pizza, echoes those findings.

“Wings are a huge thing for the Super Bowl. We double or triple our order for wings. We probably sold between 300-500 wings last year.”

Pogrebniak said Mo’s plans on having extra staff on hand to send out food orders.

“The Super Bowl hits hard all delivery and take-out orders, and we’re extra staffed for heavy delivery, though we’ll have one table the whole day,” he said.
